Spanish wind power generation increased by 15% year-on-year in March
Data from the Spanish National Grid Red Electrica de España (REE) shows that total wind power is 5.543 GWh, accounting for 27% of the country ’s total electricity demand in March. The Spanish Renewable Energy Association AEE said that the reduction in demand and the increase in power generation have resulted in the lowest price of wind power in four years, at 27 euros / MWh.REE blamed the price decline on the Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic, noting that the country ’s demand for 2020 followed a trend similar to 2019 until the government introduced the first containment measures on March 9.Despite falling prices, the increase in wind power generation has reduced carbon dioxide emissions to a record low. Preliminary data from REE shows that greenhouse gas emissions have been reduced to 1.85 million tons, a 30% reduction.Compared with five years ago, emissions in 2020 decreased by 50%, from 0.17 tons / MWh to 0.09 tons / MWh.Spain ’s wind power demand has declined over the past decade, from its peak in 2010 (260,000 GWh) to less than 250,000 GWh in 2019.Spain is one of the countries hardest hit by the coronavirus pandemic, not only in terms of number of cases, but also in terms of economy, especially in the power sector.According to REE data, the country ’s electricity demand has decreased by 4.6% compared to 2019 to 20,924 GWh.
